The Play had Left its Mark

Updated: Feb 26, 2020

It was a romantic drama with comic overtures

At times potentially tragic

Sometimes flirtatious

Academically unsound

Often erotic

Their lines were fluid

Volatile and magnetic

The actors embraced their roles

Unbelievably believable

The costuming was minimal

Just the bare necessities

No frills

Neither could deny attraction

His eyes made her heart flutter

He tried to feign disinterest

But her lips made his speech stutter

Each scene played out with fervor

A kind of hypnotic passion

You got the sense they lived the script

The acts were seamless

There was no end to the beginning

Although the lights went up and down

The curtain never fell

As the days rolled by

Fantasy blurred with reality

In the final act, as the tension built

The players crouched, ready to spring

Circling one another

Which one the hunter?

Which one the prey?

Careful now, wary, never look away

A flash of silver

A rapier jab to the heart

They never saw it coming

Indiscretions, judgement amiss

Three weeks in, the play closed

A hostile farewell and a tender kiss

Although the theater is shuttered, now completely dark

No one can deny, the play had left its mark
