the ladies across the bay

Updated: Apr 26, 2020

The ladies across the bay

Lie in repose

Softly undulating in shades of blue

Sometimes other hues creep in

A hint of muted purple or dusky violet

Bringing contrast to their ample hips

The bay spreads before them

Like a woven coverlet

Pale strips of indigo, cobalt, and green slate

The current deftly handles the warp and the weft

Against a backdrop of pale gray sky

As day ends the colors mutate

The calm, unruffled palette is transformed

The quilt is ablaze, hues of blue are joined by

Deep tangerine, tinged with a luminescent yellow

The glow on the horizon like molten gold

As the sun slides into the Salish Sea

We lie entwined, you and I

The scene spread before us

Viewed through wind twisted trees

Mozart softly playing

The fire, barely embers now

Sloughs off the last of its warmth

I know this is a temporal moment

I capture in my mind’s eye

To try and hold onto a time and place of my own making

Hoping then to somehow stoke the fire again

To bring back the warmth to the coals

The beauty and splendor are memories now

Imprisoned in a few scattered photos
